Cage Teams Return To Action In Lindsay Tourney This Weekend

The Sulphur girls and boys basketball teams return to action this week, as they will both compete in the Charles K. Heatly Invitational in Lindsay this weekend.

The Sulphur girls and boys basketball teams return to action this week, as they will both compete in the Charles K. Heatly Invitational in Lindsay this weekend.

The boys (4-4) have been working over the break on being more consistent, as they will have a tough test awaiting them on Thursday in Lindsay when they face Dickson at 11:20 a.m.

“We have really tried to work on having consistency over the break,” said Sulphur head coach Grant Bates. “We have shown flashes of good basketball. It’s just about putting that together for four quarters.”

Dickson is 3-4 on the year but is a talented group, according to Bates.

“They are a talented young team with multiple move-ins from last year,” he said. “We will need to play disciplined basketball to start our January off with a win.”

The Dogs worked on several things over the break, including some new things on both sides of the ball.

“We worked on a few wrinkles offensively and defensively that I think will help us have that consistency over the second half of the season,” Bates said.

The coach has been more than pleased with his team’s progress and commitment over the Christmas break.

“We had a few scrimmages and learned a lot about ourselves in practices,” he said. “I was proud of the guys that came in and got to work.”

Junior Devin Willis leads the boys through the first month of the season, averaging 16 points and six rebounds per game on 50% from the floor.

Sophomore Bridge Barrett has averaged 13.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and three assists per contest through the first eight games.

Senior Trace Todd and sophomore Briar Davenport are both averaging seven points a game for the Dogs thus far on the year.

The girls (2-6) have had a tough go of it so far, as the Lady Dogs have struggled to score at times.

Rasey Runyan has led the Lady Dogs through the first eight games, averaging 10.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest.

Senior Kinzi Adison is averaging 6.5 points per game for Sulphur, while Jadelyn Scheer leads the team in rebounding at 7.1 per night.

The girls will return to action on Thursday at 12:40 p.m., when they also take on Dickson.
