On Sunday, August 25 at 2:40 p.m., the Sulphur Fire Department was called to the Sulphur limb yard for a fire.
Upon arrival, firemen encountered the tornado debris pile engulfed in flames.
Early estimates by a FEMA subject matter expert showed approximately 125,000 cubic yards of mixed debris at the site. this estimate did not include the vegetation debris pile which also caught fire after an explosion n the original fire spread to the vegetation site.
Sulphur Fire Chief Pete Haines said 12 firemen responded to the call with assistance from the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Haines said due to the unknown contents in the pile as well as several big explosions, firemen went into defensive mode upon arrival. They were assisted by Pavers,of Davis, in bringing a dozer, put a containment line around the fire to prevent spreading.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
