There may be a few teams in Sulphur’s modern football history they have been unable to beat, but very few.
This Friday night at 7:00 p.m. the Bulldogs will go up against one of those teams when they travel to Washington.
The Warriors have won multiple state championships including a 41-24 win over Millwood last year and a 17-14 win over the Falcons the year before. In 2021, they were edged out of the throne room by Marlow in a 17-13 thriller and lost to Metro Christian in the 2020 title game, 48-37.
The Bulldogs, meanwhile, also sport one of the stronger football programs of the last several decades with two title wins and a runner-up and there are high expectations for this year’s talent-laden team.
In the second clash of the two teams in 2022, Washington avoided a tie in regulation when Bulldog quarterback Cash Barrett dropped back to pass on a two-point conversion try when his knee buckled and the senior fell to the ground, ending the game.
“It was a very tough way to lose,” said then Sulphur assistant coach Corey Cole. “We were so proud of our kids for the way they competed and how they represented the brand of football we expect to play each time we step on the field.”
Cole is now head coach after taking over from long-time head mentor, Jim Dixon, who died not long after the 2022 loss to the Warriors.
In 2021 game, the Warriors’ explosive offense was too much for the Dogs in a 34-13 loss. In 2023, Sulphur had its chances against the defending state champ, but lost 35-10.
Check out this year’s contest in what is expected to be a thriller.
