Lady Dogs Win Roff Softball Tourney

The Sulphur softball team had its best week of the season thus far, winning the Roff tournament in the midst of a 5-game win streak.

The Sulphur softball team had its best week of the season thus far, winning the Roff tournament in the midst of a 5-game win streak.

The Lady Dogs (12-5) beat Ada, Allen and Byng to win the tournament title. Sulphur also beat Ada 10-0 last Tuesday and Pauls Valley 18-2 on Monday.

“We are getting hot at the exact right time,” said Sulphur head coach Heath Gilbert. “We are preparing for a playoff run that the Bulldogs are used to doing.”

Sulphur beat Ada 12-2 in the first round on Thursday, followed by a close 5-4 win over Allen in the semifinals on Friday.

The Lady Dogs beat Byng 13-5 on Saturday in the finals, thanks to a great weekend from pitcher Kinsley Rochelle.

“We played unbelievable at the Roff tournament this weekend,” Gilbert said. “Kinsley Rochelle pitched all three games and did an excellent job of hitting her spots and taking control of the game.” Gilbert also highlighted a great performance in the Ada game on Thursday from Paige Collins, who was 3-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs.

“She got her bat hot in the Ada game and drove the ball deep to allow us to get the run rule,” Gilbert said.

Gilbert and his team survived on Friday to get past an Allen team, thanks to some clutch offense in the 8th inning.

“We played a great Allen team in the semifinals,” Gilbert said. “They have a great pitcher and we just hung with her and made her make some mistakes late.”

Rylee Norman reached base and was moved over by Destrie Muck and then driven in by Landri Oxley.

Gracie Ratchford had a clutch hit to tie the game in the 7th inning.

The Lady Dogs had 18 hits in the title game, blowing out Byng.

“We just blew the score open and got hot at the plate,” Gilbert said. “We really had some girls step up that have been struggling lately. That really came through for us, putting hte ball in play and getting crucial leads at the right time.”

Gilbert highlighted some standouts during the win-streak.

“Oxley is doing a great job at catcher for us and hitting the ball with Zoli (May), Rylee (Norman) and Sydnie Rolin at the top of the order,” he said. “We can make anything happen right now because of them driving the ball.”

The Lady Dogs kept the bats hot on Monday, dominating Pauls Valley 18-2 behind more hot hitting and solid pitching.

“We had a huge district game and we just really stayed hot and got another great performance from Kinsley,” Gilbert said.

Sulphur played Dickson on Tuesday and will be at the Marlow Festival this weekend.

Sulphur hosts Davis next Tuesday at home.
