It was a great weekend for the Sulphur wrestlers, as the Dogs won the team title at the Cushing Tiger Invitational.
“We wrestled really well overall,” said Sulphur head coach Conner Webb. “I feel like we really made a statement after being ranked so low all year long.”
The Dogs finished with 206 team points, ahead of runner-up Blackwell, which had 182.
“Our guys are really starting to buy-in, wrestle well and compete hard,” Webb said. “I have seen a lot of improvement in a short period of time this year.”
“Hopefully we can continue to make big strides.”
Sulphur was led by Landy DeArman (126), Maddax Mobly (157) and Justus Gilliam (HWT) each won 1st, all going 4-0 over the weekend.
Baer Webb (165) and Eathin Kennedy (175) each placed 2nd for the Dogs at their respective weights.
Noah Heitland (106) was 4th overall for Sulphur.
DeArman won by fall in all four matches, cruising to the title.
He defeated Max Tucker of Cushing in his first match and Colton Mills of Newkirk in the quarterfinals.
DeArman pinned Daniel Hernandez of Cushing in the semis before doing the same to Jase Hannah of Grove in the finals.
Mobly cruised to the finals, winning his first three matches by fall.
He pinned Cooper Brumley of Chickasha in his first match, followed by a pin of Josh Gesell of Grove in the quarterfinals.
Mobly won by fall over Kaleb Wickham of Jay in the semis before winning a dramatic match in the finals.
The sophomore won in sudden victory over Bryce Steel of Wagoner to bring home gold.
Gilliam cruised to the finals, as well, winning his first three matches by fall.
He pinned Ryker Long of Kingfisher in his first match and Dax Griffin of Wagoner in the quarterfinals.
Gilliam pinned Stevie Vafeas in under a minute in the semis before winning a 2-0 decision over Malakai Perez of Watonga in the championship match.
Webb picked up his first two wins by fall, pinning Chris Garcia of Watonga and Chandler Fortney of Bristow in his first two matches.
He won a 9-6 decision over Bodie Adams of Sallisaw in the semis to advance to the finals.
Webb lost a 5-2 decision to Brady Benham of Sperry in the finals to take home 2nd.
Eathin Kennedy went 4-1 over the weekend, as he continues to have a strong senior season.
Kennedy won a 5-3 decision over Tristan Dobbins in his opening match and won a 6-2 decision over Kellen Fry of Cushing in the 2nd round.
He picked up a sudden victory in the quarters and semi finals to advance to the championship match.
Kennedy defeated Tyren Alexander of Chickasha and Zylan Johnson of Harrah to make the finals, where he lost by fall to Hayden Yocham of Bristow.
Heitland went 4-2 over the weekend, bringing home a top four finish. He pinned Tripp Bishop of McLoud in his opening match before being pinned by Cole Smith of Skiatook in the 2nd round.
Heitland worked his way back through the consolation bracket, pinning Cooper Keeley of Blanchard and Dylan Renna of Weatherford to make the consolation semifinals.
He survived there, as well, as Heitland won a 5-0 decision over Aydin Machado of Cushing to make the 3rd place match.
He would fall to Smith again in the 3rd place match, losing a major decision 14-3.
Landon Jones (113), Jonah Cole (132), Jayden McClure (138), Kaden Seitz (144), Kaleb Madron (150), Camron Brown (190) and Brody Wallace (215) all scored four points or more for Sulphur to help bring home the team title.
Sulphur is ranked No. 5 in Class 4A for team dual rankings. The Dogs hosted Madill for a dual on Tuesday and will be at Davis on Thursday for a dual.
Sulphur will be at the loaded Greg Henning Invitational in Tuttle this weekend.
