Sulphur will go on the road in district play on Friday, as they look to extend their win streak to five games at Lone Grove.
The Bulldogs (4-1, 2-0) have blown out four opponents in a row and are fresh off a 57-14 win over McLoud last week.
No. 3 Sulphur would be a heavy favorite this week again, as Lone Grove is 0-5 on the season.
“Our kids are playing great right now,” said Sulphur head coach Corey Cole. “We have a long way to go but the discipline and dedication is impressive and we are hoping it pays off.”
Sulphur has averaged 53 points during the four game win streak, while allowing just 28 over the last month.
“We are very close to being 5-0,” said Cole. “The first half of the season has already gone fast but we have to continue to stay focused, work on the small things and pay attention to the details. Our eye is on the prize and we feel like we have a great chance to be there at the end of the year.”
Lone Grove lost 36-34 in its season opener to Anadarko, before the Longhorns fell 49-7 to Plainview.
The Longhorns also lost 21-17 at Chandler in its final non-district game.
Lone Grove has lost the two district games it has played thus far, 42-13 to Seminole and 54-0 to Victory Christian.
“Their head coach Curtis Cole does such a great job,” said Cole. “He is a great friend of our staff and we think the world of him.”
“They have a very young team right now and we have all been there. We were there two years ago and there are some growing pains you have to go through.”
The Sulphur head coach said you can see flashes on film but the youth of the Longhorns sometimes prevents consistency.
“They played Anadarko, who is 4-1, really tough,” he said. “They have some moments where they look really good and then you see some moments where more mature teams are able to take advantage.”
Overall, Cole spoke about the tough schedule the Longhorns have faced, which obviously doesn’t get any easier this week.
“They have played a really tough schedule but they have some good players,” Cole said. “They have just one senior on offense and one on defense.”
Regardless, the Dogs will need to be ready to play, as always. “He will have them ready to go and its another challenge we are going to have, to not look at their record and to go be ready to play,” said Cole. “We have to realize that we are going to get their best shot.”
Sulphur will continue to work on improving during the week and focus on themselves as they continue to move through league play.
“We have to be the best version of ourselves and work on getting better all week at practice and in the weight room,” Cole said. “These are the types of focus weeks we need to have to get where we want to be at the end of the year.”
Kickoff on Friday is at 7 p.m.
