Sulphur’s boys and girls were off to the races last Saturday, each placing third in cross country competition at the Lake Country Conference meet in Madill.
The boys were led by Kaleb Madron, 4th overall, and Korbin Mayo, 9th overall. Both were named as an All-Conference Medalist. Others in the top tier were Morgan Brown, 21st and Calvin Downey, 22nd. Zak Kirk, Keaton Seitz and Jose Contreras, rounded out the top seven Sulphur runners.
“The Lake Country Conference is possibly the toughest conference in the state and it’s always a good measuring stick,” said Sulphur coach Emile Heitland.
The conference includes the following ranked boys teams: #1Byng, #4 Plainview, #7 Sulphur, #8 Madill, all in Cass 4A and #12 Dickson in Class 3A.
“This is our last meet for the boys before the regional meet on Oct. 26,” said Heitland. “I was very pleased with how the boys ran. We had our season best team average 18:03 with our scorers. Our previous best this year was a 18:22 at the Chili Pepper. We had 8 high school boys personal records, including our top 3 finishers, Kaleb Madron 17:03, Korbin Mayo 17:25, and Morgan Brown 18:22.”
Heitland said it’s very encouraging to see the times drop so drastically at this point in the season. “This is a testament to this team’s work ethic and competitiveness.”
The high school girls were led by Jayden Lee, an All Conference Medalist and a third place finish. She was followed medalists Paxtyn Hiser and Mady Hatfield. Other Sulphur girls competing included Landry Eason, Rory McMillan, Alma Rios and Fernanda Venegas.
“The high school girls had several PR’s which is great to see this time of year,” according to the coach. Landry Eason,Alma Rios, Fernanda Venegas, Alexa Medina, Megan Wells all ran PR’s.

The PR’s came from Tiffany Curtis, and Cadence O’Kelley. “It was a great day for us as times came down on the same course that we ran earlier in the year,” the coach said. The junior high will compete in the All-Star meet this Thursday in Chickasha which will be their state meet. The high school girls will go to Cushing on Wednesday to compete.
In an earlier meet at Waurika last Tuesday, the high school girls won fourth as a team.

“After being off the last few weeks it was good to be back racing. The girls finishing 4th in a tough meet was a great accomplishment. Landry Eason coming off an injury and running a Personal Record was great to see,” the coach said.
