The Sulphur Fire Department received call about 5:52 a.m. Saturday of a structure fire at the Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church, located west of Sulphur on S.H. 7.
Sulphur Assistant Chief Tracy Laxton said upon arrival, firemen noticed smoke on the southwest side of building, then went around to that side and encountered internal flames. “They were able to get it under control and extinguish the fire, but not before major damage to parts of the church,” he said.
Sulphur was assisted in their effort by Davis Fire Department supplying two trucks and personnel.
A host of local and volunteer firemen assisted at the scene.
Laxton said the department was called back to scene at 8:20 a.m. to douse rekindled hot spots.
The fire is being investigated by State Fire Marshal’s office as arson and one person is in custody, according to Laxton, and the investigation is ongoing.
