A comet visible from earth only once every 80,000 years made a pass over the southern Oklahoma area on October 12 and was captured in this photo by Paul Bayless of Sulphur.

Bayless snapped this photo just after sunset, looking west from the Sulphur Walmart parking lot.

According NASA, the comet named ATLAS, likely traveled from the outer reaches of our solar system, made its closest transit past the Sun on September 27 and was expected to come within approximately 70 million kilometers (44 million miles) of Earth.

The comet was visible primarily to those in the Southern Hemisphere and the Tropics until about October 8. Viewers in the Northern Hemisphere would get more opportunities to catch a glimpse in subsequent days.
