The Sulphur Bulldogs and the Victory Christian Conquerors will battle it out on Friday in a game that will decide the District 3A-2 championship.
The Dogs are unbeaten in district play at 5-0 and Victory Christian comes in at 3-2 with wins over Lone Grove (54-0), McLoud (38-21), and Mannford (64-16). They lost to Bristow (3120) and to Perkins-Tryon (44-30).
Overall, Sulphur is at 7-1 with their lone loss coming at the hands of #1 Washington in a double overtime thriller to start the season. They also won their other two preseason games vs. Davis and Cache.
Sulphur coach Corey Cole said the Dogs will need to continue to focus on fundamentals and getting better each day as some of the keys to the game.
“We need to take care of the ball and play with great tempo on offense and be physical and fast on defense. Creating turnovers has been our motto and has been really good for us and we need to continue that this Friday.”
Cole said the Dogs will need to play one of the best games of the season to have a chance to win.
“Victory Christian is a very talented football team with athletes all over the field,” said Cole. “Their quarterback is a special talent who can run and pass and their running back is a really good player. They will try and get us to align wrong in all of the formations that they run and will blitz over 70% of the time on defense.”
Cole said with the district championship on the line Friday, his team is excited to play in this moment. “This has been goal 1 since day one and it’s right there for them to do it at home Friday night on Senior Night,” he said.
Sulphur’s senior players, band and cheer team members will all be honored in activities just prior to the game.
After Friday’s game, the Dogs will close out the regular season at Mannford on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7:00 p.m.
Game time this Friday night in Sulphur is 7:00 p.m.
