Even though they were prohibitive favorites, Sulphur didn’t let that or a cold rain distract from their chance to go undefeated last Friday.
The Dogs (9-1,7-0) scored the first seven times they had the ball, and once whey they didn’t, to take a 46-0 lead into the halftime dressing room and cruised to a 60-0 victory at Mannford last Friday.
The Dogs opened the game with a 13-play, 53-yard drive, going up 8-0 as Maddax Mobly scored from four yards out, then ran in untouched on the two-point conversion.
“I was very proud of our kids and how they handled the sloppy conditions at Mannford,” said head coach Corey Cole. “The field was a swamp and we played most of the game in heavy rain. I thought our kids were focused on the little things and took great pride in protecting the ball and playing extremely physical out again.”
Once again, it was not a just a game of Sulphur outscoring their opponent by a wide margin. Defense played another large roll as the Dogs continued their stellar play in that area.
Sulphur allowed only 26 yards to the Pirates (1-9, 0-7), similar to how they performed last week in a 67-yard total net yard effort against Victory Christian.
The Dogs intercepted a Mannford pass for a touchdown, but it was nullified by a hands-to-the-back penalty as Bridge Barrett sprinted about 60 yards to the end-zone.
Another gem was turned in by Sulphur lineman Giddeon Peterson, who recorded a sack in the end-zone for a safety that gave the Dogs a 10-0 lead.
Cole gave high praise for his special teams’ play and to his front seven linemen who he said played “great and controlled the line of scrimmage all night.”
Among the special teams’ play that Cole praised came when two of his punt return specialists, Briar Davenport and Carter Cole, each scored Davenport raced 63 yards to pay-dirt on a kick return as Sulphur went up 18-0 about midway through the first period and Carter Cole raced 44 yards for another score later on down the line.
The coach also praised Madden Duck, Maddux Boyd, and Eli Vinson, who he said “played very well on all special teams.”
On a night when the offense should be hampered somewhat, Sulphur went full throttle, scoring each time they had the ball except for their final possession when they ran out the clock.
Cole said Mobly “continued his stellar play” with four rushing TDs and about 90 yards on only a few attempts. Cole also praised Garin Watson and Grady Hardoin for their rushing effort.
“We didn’t throw it much because of the conditions, but I thought our o-line and receivers all blocked well Friday,” said Cole. “It was a great win and nice for us to finish 7-0 in district play.”
After the Dogs scored on their first possession, then scored a safety on Mannford’s opening series, Davenport took the ensuing kickoff to the house on a 63-yard return to give Sulphur an 18-0 lead with just 6:34 left in the first quarter as Mobly again plunged in for the two-point conversion.
Sulphur held the Pirates to zero net yards on their next possession, then got the ball back at the 50 on a punt return. Following a holding penalty that set Sulphur back 10 yards on first down, Mobly raced 32 yards for a first down, then he took it to the end-zone on a 17yard run one play later to give his team a 25-0 lead following Colten Cole’s PAT kick.
Mannford pecked out their first, first down of the game on the next series after a five-yard Sulphur penalty on fourth down, but they paid for it when Barrett intercepted a Pirate pass two plays later, scoring from about 60 yards. The play was called back to the Pirate 21 on a Sulphur penalty, but Mobly scored from there as the Dogs went up 32-0 with 11:52 left in the second quarter. Cole’s PAT kick was good.
The Pirates went nowhere on their next possession, and could only mount about a 15-yard punt to the midfield.
The Dogs scored in just five plays on this drive with a 12-yard pass from Luke Linville to Colten Cole and a 15-yard Cash Matlack run as the two big plays in the drive. Mobly negotiated the final four yards with 8:23 left in the second quarter to give the Dogs a 39-0 lead following Cole’s PAT boot.
With only one net yard in three attempts, Mannford then punted to their own 44 where Carter Cole was waiting. He raced in from there and the ensuing PAT kick from Colten Cole pushed Sulphur over the 500-point milestone for the season.
