Trump’s Big Win Nationally Mirrored In State, Murray County

Cole Retains Congressional Seat In District 4

President- elect Donald Trump’s electoral college landslide win in the November 5 general election was mirrored not only in the State of Oklahoma, but even more so in Murray County where he won by nearly 80 percent of the vote.

All total, there were 5,996 votes cast for president in Murray County, and Trump received 4,686 or 79.69 percent, while Kamala Harris garnered 1,078 or 18.33 percent.

Statewide, Trump gathered in 66.17 percent of the vote to Harris’ 31.90 percent. The Libertarian candidate and two Independent presidential candidates received only a smattering of votes, less than two percent in this county and only fractionally more statewide.

Meanwhile, longtime U.S. District 4 Republican Congressman Tom Cole had little trouble in winning another term as he easily beat Democratic challenger Mary Brannon nearly three to one.

District-wide, Cole captured 65.25 percent of the vote compared to Brannon’s 28.27 percent. Independent James Stacy was a distant third in that race with 6.48 percent.

Cole ran strong in Murray County, capturing a total of 4,528 votes (77.68%) with Brannon getting only 944 (16.19%) and Stacy just 357 (6.12%).

The only statewide race that developed was for Oklahoma Corporation Commissioner where Republican J. Brian Bingman won with 63.68 percent vote total over Democrat Harold D. Spradling’s 28.90%, and Libertarian Chad Williams’ 7.42%.

In a bit of a shocker, one of the state’s supreme court justices, Yvone Kauger, lost her bid for retention in District 4, capturing slightly less than 50 percent of the vote and will now be removed from that body. The remainder of the justices and judges of the Oklahoma Court of Criminal and Civil Appeals were all retained.

There were two state questions on the Nov. 5 ballot, one dealing with the creation of public infrastructure districts in the state (S.Q.

833) and the other clarifying that only citizens of the United States are allowed to vote in this state (S.Q. 834).

State Question 833 went down in flames with 61.61 percent of those casting their ballot voting no on the measure.

State Question 834 was approved by a wide margin with a yes total of 80.73 percent.

Murray County voters also turned down S.Q. 833, and approved S.Q. 834 by similar margins.
