Team Preps For Tourney In Washington This Week
Girls Beat Tish, Lose To Byng

The Sulphur girls got a big win at Tish last Tuesday, as they continue to work towards playing their best ball into late January.

Sulphur (4-9) won 51-25 at Tishomingo last Tuesday, before losing 46-35 on Friday at Byng.

The Lady Dogs were at No. 11 (2A) Davis on Tuesday and will be at the Rocky Clarke Invitational in Washington this weekend.

Sulphur will open up tourney play against No. 18 North Rock Creek on Thursday at 10 a.m.

The Lady Dogs will play the winner or loser of Tecumseh or Cache.

With a win, Sulphur will play on Friday at 3:10 p.m. and with a loss, the Lady Dogs will play Friday at 10 a.m. again.

SULPHUR 51, TISH 25

The Lady Dogs started fast and didn’t look back at Tish last Tuesday, as Sulphur picked up a huge win.

Sulphur came out on fire, leading 24-8 after a quarter.

The Lady Dogs shot 46% from the floor as a team and held Tish to just 19% shooting.

“We got a much needed win against Tish,” Sulphur head coach Toby Todd said.

Rasey Runyan continued to play well, as she led the Lady Dogs with 22 points. seven rebounds, three assists and two steals on 9-of-16 shooting.

Courtney Keith had 11 points on 4-of-5 from the floor to go along with three boards and two assists.

“We had pretty balanced scoring,” Todd said. “Rasey played well and Courtney had another good game.”

Mabry Jones had a great game for Sulphur, as she finished with eight points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals on 4-of-6 shooting.

“Mabry was excellent for us,” Todd said.

Kinzi Adkison continued to play well from her floor general spot, as she had four points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals in the win.

“Kinzi did a great job as our floor leader,” Todd said.

The Lady Dogs forced 21 turnovers, scoring 20 points off those giveaways.

“Our defense was able to force turnovers,” Todd said.

Sulphur also led 32-14 in paint scoring, had 23 deflections and 11 steals in the win.

BYNG 46, SULPHUR 35

Sulphur got behind early but battled back and had a chance late in the game last Friday at Byng.

After trailing 21-11 at half, a big 3rd quarter got Sulphur right back in it.

The Lady Dogs cut the Pirates lead to 27-26 heading into the 4th.

Sulphur tied the game at 32-32 midway through the 4th before the Lady Dogs ran out of gas.

“This was one of our best efforts as a team,” Todd said. “We had the game tied with three minutes left which is a huge improvement from our first game with them.”

“We played with great effort and intensity.”

A late turnover gave Byng momentum and the Pirates closed it out with free throws.

“We had a big turnover on a wide open inbounds play,” Todd said. “They went down and got a 3-point play. That is when they took the lead and then made free throws down the stretch.”

Sulphur shot just 26% from the floor, but held Byng to just 29%.

Runyan led the way with 11 points, nine rebounds and two steals.

Keith had nine points, four rebounds and four blocks.

Jadelyn Scheer played great for Sulphur, as she had seven boards, three rebounds and two assists.

“She had one of her best games,” Todd said. “Rasey and Courtney continued to play well for us.”

The Lady Dogs had 21 turnovers as a team in the loss.

“We still had a chance late in the game in spite of our 21 team turnovers,” Todd said. “Byng has some great guards and are coached well. They took advantage of our turnovers.”

“I’m very proud of our seniors in this game. I felt like they all gave everything they had. That is all a coach can ask for and I appreciate their efforts.”
