It was another stellar weekend for the Sulphur wrestlers, as they came home with a runner-up team finish at the Greg Henning Invitational in Tuttle.
The Dogs were second to only tournament host Tuttle. Sulphur scored 235 team points behind Tuttle’s 299.
This comes off the heels of Sulphur winning the team title at the Cushing Tiger Invitational last weekend.
“We wrestled pretty well for the most part,” said Sulphur head coach Conner Webb. “We got some matchups and wins that we needed.”
The Dogs were led by Baer Webb (165) and Justus Gilliam (HWT), each of whom brought home individual titles at their respective weights.
Baer Webb went 4-0 over the weekend, winning all four matches by fall.
He pinned Raheem Ellzey of Lawton Macarthur in the opening round, before doing the same to Hunter Patterson of Cleveland in the quarterfinals.
Webb pinned Conner Pair of Weatherford in the semis in less than a minute to make the finals, where he would pin Jackson Moss of Dumas, TX in just over a minute for the title.
Gilliam was just as dominant, winning the HWT title with three pins and a major decision.
He pinned Avry Nailon of Weatherford in the opening round, followed by a 22 second fall victory over Brady McIntyre of Tuttle in the quarterfinals.
Gilliam won big in the semifinals, beating Tyrus Bradley of Tuttle 9-1 to make the finals, where he would pin Jace Warren of Tuttle for the title.
Maddax Mobly (157) was runner-up over the weekend for the Dogs, while Noah Heitland (106), Jonah Cole (132), Eathin Kennedy (175) and Camron Brown (190) each placed 3rd for Sulphur.
Mobly went 2-1 over the weekend, losing in the finals.
He received a bye in the opening round, before pinning Matthew Chapa in the quarterfinals.
He beat Walker Johnson of Harrah in the semis, winning an 8-3 decision.
Mobly fell in the finals to Broxton Baxter of Dumas, losing a 12-8 decision.
Heitland went 5-1 over the weekend to bring home 3rd.
He beat Blaise Williams of Dumas in the opening round before falling to Takarian Crewnshaw- Jones of Tuttle in the quarterfi nals.
Heitland battled back all the way through the consolation bracket, beating Isak Whitten of McLoud and Carlos Mallaganes of Dumas by major decision, and pinning Noah Henderson of Harrah.
Heitland won the 3rd place match in a rematch over Crenshaw-Jones, getting revenge in a 4-2 decision.
Cole was 4-1 over the weekend, also winning 3rd.
He won each of his first two matches by fall, pinning Kameron Johnson of Little Axe and Jensen McWhirt of Cleveland to advance to the semifinals.
He was beaten in the semis by Bodi Wilson of Tuttle, but battled back in the consolation semis to win a 6-2 decision over Woodley Johnson of Westmoore.
Cole won the 3rd place match by pinning Creek Williams of Weatherford in just over a minute. Kennedy went 3-1 over the weekend to join the 3rd placers from Sulphur.
After getting a bye in the opening round, Kennedy had no problem with Rye Blackwood of Plainview, winning a 13-4 major decision.
Zylan Johnson pinned Kennedy in the semifinals, but the senior was able to win the consolation semis, pinning Dominic Hernandez of Weatherford to make the 3rd place match.
He closed out the weekend on a positive note, winning a 5-2 decision over Rashard Ellzey of Lawton Mac.
Brown lost to Noah McDoulett of Tuttle in the opening match, but won three straight to bring home 3rd.
He staved off elimination in the consolation bracket, winning by tech fall over Jude Muniz of Cleveland and pinning Gavyn Morgan of McLoud.
Brown beat Cam McDoulett of Tuttle in the 3rd place match, pinning him at the 1:03 mark.
Landon Jones (113), Kaleb Madron (150) and Gideon Peterson (HWT) were all 4th for Sulphur.
Jones was 3-2 over the weekend, picking up two wins by fall early on.
He pinned Aiden Terhune of Westmoore and Dathan Cuevas of LittleAxe in his first two matches.
He was pinned by Cooper Jackson in the semifinals, but battled back to make the 3rd place match by pinning Bo Rudisll of Plainview in the consolation semis.
Jones lost a 6-1 decision to Garrett Spurlock of Tuttle in the 3rd place match.
Madron was also 3-2, following the same path as Jones.
He pinned Stroud Tucker of Little Axe in the opening round, followed by a 4-2 decision over Jacob Hadden of McLoud to make the semis.
Madron lost a major decision 9-0 to Beau Tinder of Tuttle before staying alive with a fall victory over Lane Bailey of Cleveland.
Madron lost the rematch to Hadden in the 3rd place match, falling in a 7-4 decision.
Peterson went 3-2, as well. He lost his opening round match to Warren, but battled back through the consolation bracket.
He pinned McEntyre, Aaron Jeffries of Westmoore and Kaegan Williams of Plainview to wrestle for 3rd place, where he was pinned by Bradley.
Landy DeArman (126) was 5th, while Jadyn McClure (138) and Brody Wallace (215) were each 6th.
DeArman was busy, going 6-2 over the weekend to place for Sulphur.
He pinned Alston Martin of Weatherford to open the weekend before losing a 9-2 decision to Brandon Lamar of Tuttle in the second round.
DeArman won four straight matches by fall in the consolation bracket to battle back, as he pinned Caden Abbitt of Little Axe, John Bamba of Lawton Mac, Fransisco Gomez of Weatherford and Brody Byars of Harrah along the way.
He lost a 5-4 decision to Lamar again in the consolation semis but pinned Abbitt for the second time on the weekend in the 5th place match.
McClure went 2-3 over the weekend to bring home 6th for the Dogs.
He won a major decision over Berek Buckaloo of Weatherford, shutting him out 8-0 in the opening round.
McClure won in the quarterfi nals by pinning Jackson Witt of Tuttle, before losing in the semis to Kole Parker of Tuttle in a 15-4 major decision.
McClure lost in the consolation semis to Brandt Kiggins of Tuttle, falling 8-3.
He lost the 5th place match in a 6-2 decision to Ryatt Hernandez.
Wallace was also 2-3 on the weekend for Sulphur to place 6th.
He lost to Lane Gourley of Little Axe in a 3-2 decision in the quarterfinals after receiving a first round bye.
Wallace pinned Jerry Welch of Harrah and got a forfeit to make the consolation semis, where he lost a 9-3 decision over Devyn Anderson of Plainview.
Wallace fell in the 5th place match, losing to Kade Lynch of McLoud.
Sulphur beat Madill 73-6 and Davis 72-6 in dual contests this week, wrapping up another successful stretch.
However, Webb still thinks his team has room to improve.
“We still have lots of improvements to make but we are heading in the right direction,” he said.
The head coach praised his team for continuing to work and make each other better.
“Everyone is competing well and pushing each other in practice,” Webb said. “It’s making a difference.”
The Dogs are at Plainview on Thursday for a dual before going to district duals next Tuesday at McLoud.
