The Sulphur City Council, in their regular meeting on December, 11, 2023, adopted a resolution setting the filing period for the annual city election and the election date.
Councilors set Tuesday, April 2 as the election date. The filing period will open at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 12 and will close at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14.
Candidates wishing to file for a city council position can turn in their paperwork to the Sulphur City Clerk at the City Complex, 600 West Broadway in Sulphur. All candidates are required to file a financial disclosure report and campaign contributions and expenditures reports as required by state law.
There will be three council spots on the five-member board up for election during this cycle, including Ward 1, Ward 3 and Ward 5. The election is nonpartisan.
The term for each of council position is for two years.
To be qualified to run for a position on the Sulphur City Council, a person must be an actual resident and registered voter for the ward in which the individual is seeking at the time of filing for the office.
According to the Sulphur City Charter, all candidates seeking office will be voted upon by all the voters within the city limits, but the individual must reside in the ward for which they are seeking.
The Murray County Election Board, who conducts the actual voting, will designate the polling places.
There are three incumbents currently holding office in the three wards. They include Dan Gordon (Ward 1), Darrell Cole (Ward 3) and Alan McKay (Ward 5).
Winners in each city election will be sworn into office at the council’s May meeting.
Next year, the other two council positions, Ward 2 and Ward 4 will open for election during the same general time frames with a February filing period.
