A 74-year-old Sulphur women died in a home structure fire last Tuesday night in Sulphur, officials reported.
According to Fire Chief Pete Haines, the Sulphur Fire Department received a call at approximately 10:00 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 7 of a house fire at 1113 West 10th Street.
Sulphur Police and a Murray County Sheriff’s deputy were first to arrive on the scene and were told a woman, identified as Nancy Littrell, was trapped inside, according to Haines. The officers attempted to enter the structure but were pushed back by heavy flames and smoke.
When the Sulphur Fire Department arrived, they encountered the fully involved structure with the lady still trapped inside, Haines said. He said firemen were also hindered by the flames and smoke, but crews were able to enter structure, locate victim and bring her out and immediately began CPR until Murray County EMS arrived.
The victim was transported by EMS to Arbuckle Memorial Hospital where she later died.
Haines said three other family members were able to escape the structure unharmed.
Sulphur firemen were able to get the fire under control and out despite the cold temperatures icing up the sidewalks and porches, according to Haines.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The Sulphur Fire Department was assisted by the Davis Fire Department, Murray County Sheriff’s Office, Sulphur Police Department and the Murray County EMS.
Haines this week encouraged citizens to check batteries in smoke detectors and make sure they have working detectors and be cautious when using space heaters, ensuring they are in safe places and not close to any flammable materials.
