Fresh off their most dominating performance in memory at Madill, Sulphur’s wrestlers took Class 5A, #4 ranked Elgin to the wire before losing in the last match, then proceeded to win third in the prestigious Greg Henning Tournament in Tuttle tournament a day later.
It was definitely a busy week for the Dogs, who started last Tuesday at Madill with an 81-0 drubbing of the Wildcats in one of the most crushing performances ever.
Then, the team went halfway across the state to Elgin where they took on the last year’s state champion Owls in a battle of two top five teams in their class. The Dogs, ranked 5th in Class 4A and Owls, a top five team in Class 5A, battled it out to the last match but ended up losing the dual, 42-33.
With no rest, it was then on to Tuttle where the Dogs won third in one of the most prestigious wrestling tournaments in the state. Sulphur finished behind host Tuttle and Blackwell.
Sulphur junior Maddax Mobly was crowned champion in the tournament’s 157-pound division, and seven other Dogs won place medals. They included:
•Baer Webb (165), 2nd;
•Noah Heitland (113), 3rd;
•Gideon Petersen (285) 3rd;
•Landy DeArman (132), 4th;
•Landon Jones (120), 5th;
•Jonah Cole (120), 5th
•Michael Morris (175), 5th The Bulldogs will have another big week upcoming as they competed in the district dual tournament where they will be looking to qualify for the state tournament for third consecutive year.
Teams in the district dual tournament include Sulphur, Bristow, Plainview, McLoud and Madill.
