Seven Sulphur boys and one Lady Bulldog will be making the trek to Oklahoma City’s State Fairgrounds Arena this weekend to compete in the state wrestling tournament.

The Bulldogs will be led by last year’s state champion Baer Webb (165), and Maddax Mobly (157), both first place winners in last week’s Class 4A Regional Tournament in Weatherford.

The Sulphur team will also be bolstered by five other matmen who won place medals in the regionals. They include: Noath Heitland (113), and Landon Jones (120), both second place regional winners; and Landy DeArman (132)and Gideon Petersen (285), third place regional winners; and Jonah Cole (126), a fifth place winner last week.

In addition to Webb, Jones, DeArman and Cole are returning state qualifiers.

As a team, the Dogs won fourth place in the tough western regional. One Sulphur Lady Bulldog, Bintlee Burch (140), will also make the trip to Oklahoma City, after winning third in the Class 5A regional last week.

Last season, the Dogs had two state champions, Webb and Justus Gilliam and that was the first time that has happened since 1979.

The tournament will get going this Thursday at 6:00 p.m., with the wrestle-in matches, followed by the first round at 9:30 a.m. on Friday.

Also on Friday will be the wrestle-back round at 5:00 p.m. and the semifinals at 7:30 p.m.
