Building Was Once Used At Football Dressing Room, Wrestling& Weight Rooms
The more than 50-year-old Sulphur High School football field house, originally built in the early 1970’s as a metal building and later bricked, was demolished on Friday, Feb. 21.
The building had survived being flooded several times through the years and in recent years had suffered some structural issues resulting in the building of a new more modern and updated field house that was completed in 2019, said Sulphur Superintendent Matt Holder.
Holder said in the past few years the building has served as the wrestling room, but the wrestlers will be getting a new facility in the new ongoing construction project, although it is not a part of the bond issue.
The new wrestling room will also serve as a safe room for the school. Bids for the project have been awarded and construction has begun.
The long term plan for the space created by the demolition, school officials would like to see a new more modern concession and restrooms that would serve both the football and baseball fields.
Holder said the new bond construction for a gym, auditorium, classrooms and more is on track with no major delays and the buildings should be in the dry soon.
