Madron Excels In Distance Events At Elgin Meet
Eli Vinson set the school record in pole vault with a jump of 14 feet, 1 inch last week in the Elgin meet.
The jump also won the event for Vinson, with the second place finisher only reaching 12 feet.
“Eli has been chasing this record, so it was really exciting to see him accomplish his goal,” said Coach Emile Heitland.
Vinson began pole vaulting in eighth grade as a challenge for himself.
“Now, after years of hard work, setbacks, and countless jumps, I’ve broken the school record with 14 feet and 1 inch,” Vinson said. “This journey has taught me that with determination and faith in God, you can rise higher than you ever imagined—literally and in life.”
Kaleb Madron set a personal record to win the 1600 meters with a time of 4:39.18.
“Kaleb hasn’t run the 1600 meters this year due to running on the 1600-meter relay,” Heitland said. “Although I took him off the relay this week so he could run the 1600, he ran his fastest time ever.”
Madron also placed third in the 800 meters.
Overall, the Sulphur team tied for eighth place.
“Elgin is an extremely tough meet with a lot of 5A and 6A schools,” Heitland said. “I think it is very beneficial for our athletes to see this kind of competition to prepare them for regionals and state.”
Zak Kirk also medaled with a fifth place finish in the 3200 meter.
Acer Dixon set a personal record in the shot put 41-07 and discus 115-05.
Nick McGill ran his best split in the 1600 meter relay this week.
Briar Davenport posted the seventh fastest 100 meter time in class 4A this year.
In the junior high division, the team placed tenth. Pole vaulters Keaton Seitz placed second, and Michael Wright placed third.
“This was the first meet this year that the boys team had all of their athletes,” Heitland said. “We don’t get all of our boys until powerlifting state is over. So it was really exciting to see our full team out there and getting to piece together our sprint relays.”
