Murray County Sheriff Darin Rogers’ team intercepted a load of drugs as they passed through the county, authorities announced this week.
According to Undersheriff Ben Flowers, lawmen were working a highway interdiction shift in rural Murray County on January 12, 2024, when they came into contact with two alleged drug smugglers.
Flowers said Deputy Ryan Thomas initially noticed a black sedan traveling south through Murray County and he was able to develop probable cause to conduct a lawful traffic stop on the vehicle.
“Deputy Thomas noticed the vehicle was slow to come to a stop and observed the occupants were moving frantically inside the passenger compartment,” Flowers said. Once stopped, Deputy Thomas spoke with the occupants and determined their names.
Flowers said the driver, Ryan Gibson, 30, of Davis, was asked to join Deputy Thomas in his patrol. Deputy Mike Woods arrived with his K-9 partner Max and prepared to run his K-9 partner, Max, when the passenger explained there were drugs in the vehicle.
According to Flowers, Deputy Woods detained the passenger, Carl Herweck, 31, of Ardmore.
Flowers said a search of the vehicle yielded approximately four ounces of crystal methamphetamine.
The duo was arrested and transported to the Murray County Jail. During booking, Gibson was found to be in possession of what is believed to be a partially smoked Fentanyl pill, Flowers said in his report.
In the days following, Herweck was charged in the Murray County District Court for Trafficking in Illegal Drugs and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Gibson was charged in the Chickasaw Nation District Court for Possession of Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute and Possession of Controlled Substance.
Sheriff Rogers this week commended his team “for their hard work and dedication to keeping Murray County safe. Although these drugs appeared to be destined for Carter County, his team of lawmen were able to lawfully seize the illegal substances.”
