The Sulphur powerlifting team kicked off its season last week, as the Dogs look to win their 7th straight state championship this spring.

Sulphur competed at the Bethel Powerlifting Meet at Firelake in Shawnee last Thursday, placing 2nd as a team.

“This meet was the largest in the history of Oklahoma high school powerlifting,” said Sulphur head coach Keith Garrett. “There were almost 1,200 kids competing and I thought our guys did a great job at their first meet of the season.”

Among the many teams, the Dogs competed against the reigning 4A state champions and the reigning 6A runner-up.

Miami won the meet with 141 team points, followed by Sulphur at 129. Edmond Santa Fe was 3rd at 108 team points.

The Dogs were led by juniors Austin Garrett and Caden Cole, both of whom finished 1st in their weight classes.

Garrett totaled 1,290 lbs. in the 181 lb. weight class to bring home gold.

Cole totaled 1,370 lbs. in the 275 lbs. weight class to place 1st.

Three Bulldogs were 2nd individually, including Noah Riley, Nash Williamson and Connor Sullivan.

Riley (157) totaled 1,180 lbs. to place 2nd, while Williamson (220) finished with a total of 1,415 lbs.

Sullivan (242) totaled 1,465 in his class to finish 2nd.

Several other Dogs had a solid showing in the season-opening meet, as Cash Matlack, Cooper Cole and Caden Frost all were 8th in their weight classes.

Both the boys and girls will next compete at the Dave Tapp Powerlifting Invitational next Friday at Chickasha. Action begins at 9 a.m. The boys will follow that up with a meet at Tishomingo on Feb. 23.
