The Sulphur girls had another difficult week, falling twice to ranked opponents and will now get ready for the postseason.

Sulphur (6-17) fell to No. 16 (3A) Lone Grove 57-42 last Tuesday and No. 9 (3A) Kingston 49-28 on Friday night.

The Lady Dogs will be at Plainview for districts this Friday.

The Indians are 19-3 on the year and have beaten Sulphur twice this year.

“They are a ranked team in 4A with only three losses to high quality opponents,” said Sulphur head coach Toby Todd. “They have great players with a great young coach.”

Todd spoke about the keys to the game for Sulphur on Friday.

“We will have to cut down on our turnovers to have a chance against them,” he said. “They score well off their defense. They are very long and live off deflections and steals.”

LONE GROVE 57, SULPHUR 42

A big 1st and 3rd quarter proved to be the difference in last Tuesday’s game at Lone Grove, as the Longhorns beat the Lady Dogs.

Lone Grove led 24-12 after a quarter and 34-22 at half, after Sulphur battled in the 2nd.

“We got up 10-4 in the 1st and then they went on a 22-2 run,” Todd said. “They had a girl hit three 3s in the first quarter.”

But the Longhorns extended the lead with another good 3rd quarter, leading 48-28 heading to the 4th.

Sulphur had 23 turnovers in the loss and were outscored 26-12 in the paint.

Senior Kinzi Adkison led the Dogs with 16 points, five rebounds and four steals.

Sulphur shot just 34% from the floor, while Lone Grove shot 43%.

Jayden Lee and Rasey Runyan each had nine for Sulphur in the loss.

KINGSTON 49, SULPHUR 28

The Lady Dogs got down early again and could not come back in Friday’s loss at Kingston.

The Redskins led 15-5 through a quarter and 26-10 at halftime.

“Their defense is really good and we could not handle their pressure,” Todd said. “They had us on lockdown across the board.”

Sulphur shot 36% from the floor to Kingston’s 33%, but the Lady Dogs had 30 turnovers in the loss.

“We actually shot better than they did but with so many turnovers, we just didn’t get near the amount of shot attempts,” Todd said. “They had 48 shots to our 28. It is hard to win games with that low of shot attempts.”

Kingston turned those 30 turnovers into 17 points.

The Redskins led 38-19 through three quarters.

Kingston also had a 26-14 advantage in the paint and 17 offensive rebounds for eight second chance points.

Runyan led the Lady Dogs with 11 points, six boards and three assists.

Mabry Jones had seven points and three boards, while Jadelyn Scheer had six points and four rebounds.

“Mabry made all three shot attempts and played great,” Todd said. “Rasey was strong again and our leading scorer and rebounder.”
