McCortney’s Senate Review

Education is a top legislative priority year after year, and a consistent topic of discussion at the State Capitol. It’s always a pleasure to welcome some of our state’s finest educational institutions to the Senate and my office. On Higher Education Day, we welcomed students and staff from East Central University and had the opportunity to hear about their continued efforts to improve higher education and workforce development in our state. ECU is truly an asset to our community, and it was a pleasure to visit with them.

We also welcomed guests from McCall’s Chapel School in Ada to the Capitol this week. They offer incredible support and educational opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities. Their services aid many families in Ada and across the state, and it was an honor to recognize them in the Senate chamber.

As far as legislative work, our committees are still considering the bills they’ve been assigned this session. We’ve heard close to a dozen measures on the floor, with many more to come over the next few weeks.

This week, the Senate Republican Caucus also voted for the Pro Tem designee. I was honored to be selected by my fellow caucus members to serve in this role. Pro Tem Treat will continue serving until his term ends in November, but I look forward to this opportunity to serve my caucus, the Legislature, and most importantly, our state, in this position. Since being elected to office in 2016, I have held various titles including chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee; caucus vice chair; and my current role as Majority Floor Leader. Throughout my time in each of these positions, my objective has remained the same, to ensure every member has a chance to reach their legislative goals and serve their constituents to their highest ability. This will remain my top priority as I transition into the role of Pro Tempore.

It is an honor to serve as your voice in the state Senate. My door is always open for constituents who may have questions, comments, or concerns regarding legislative matters. If I can be of assistance to you, please contact my office at (405) 521-5541 or [email protected].
