McKay Wins Sulphur Ward 1 Council Seat Unopposed; Races Emerge In Wards 3, 5

Two File For Ward 3 Seat, Three File In Ward 5; Election Set April 2

Sulphur Ward 1 councilman Alan McKay won a second term in office after filing unopposed last week during the annual city election filing period.

The retired fireman this week thanked the voters for their support. “I would like to take this time say thank you for all the support and encouragement shown to me the past two years as Ward 1 City Councilman,” he said in an ad in this week’s Times-Democrat.

“I hope and pray the citizens of Sulphur recognize the need for new leadership and change so we can preserve and improve our city.”

The filing period for three city council seats ended last Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.

In the other two city wards, races developed in Ward 3 and Ward 5 where five people will battle it out for the two seats.

In Ward 3, incumbent councilman Darrell Cole is being challenged by former Sulphur Fire Chief, Gary Tingle, who retired.

Cole, a retired Sulphur Public Schools’ teacher and coach, will be going for his third term on that board after he filed unopposed in March of 2020. Cole took over the reins of the Ward 3 seat from Brandon Flowers, who did not file for re-election that year after having served three terms in office.

Although Tingle is new to the political realm, he is not new to city government after having served as a fireman and later fire chief.

In Ward 5, three people filed for the seat including incumbent, Dan Gordon. He will be challenged by former Sulphur councilman, Robert Clark, a Sulphur certified public accountant, and Crystal Brewer, a Sulphur business clerk.

Two of the candidates this week issued opening statements in ads in this week’s Times-Democrat as they kick off their campaigns.

The non-partisan election will be held Tuesday,April 2. The term for each position is for two years.

According to the Sulphur City Charter, all candidates seeking office will be voted upon by all the voters within the city limits, but the individual must reside in the ward for which they are seeking.

The Murray County Election Board, who conducts the actual voting, will designate the polling places.
