PLAY BALL

The Sulphur Bulldogs baseball team opened the season late last week, suffering two losses before picking up the first win on Monday.

Sulphur (1-2) lost to Ada 6-5 on Friday and Roff 5-3 on Saturday.

The Bulldogs beat Ardmore 9-3 on Monday.

“We are struggling to score early in the season,” said Sulphur head coach Mike Matlack. “We are making a few adjustments and those paid off against Ardmore.”

Matlack praised his defense and pitching for the start they have had to the season.

“We are getting very good pitching and defense all around for the most part,” he said.

As the season progresses, Matlack is hoping his team continues to improve as they build towards the postseason.

“We are looking at improvement as the year progresses and hope to continue playing better each week,” he said.

ADA 6, SULPHUR 5

Ada got up early in the season opener for Sulphur and the Dogs battled back, but came up just short.

The Cougars led 5-1 through three innings and 6-3 through four.

Sulphur scored two runs in the top of the 7th, trying to mount a comeback but came up just a run short.

The Dogs left 12 on base in the loss.

Sulphur had just four hits, as Maddax Mobly, Eathin Kennedy, Jett Runyan and Bridge Barrett all singled.

Barrett and Briar Davenport each scored two runs for Sulphur, while Cash Matlack plated the other.

Kennedy took the loss on the mound, allowing four earned and five runs total in just two innings.

Sulphur led 1-0 to start the game but Ada answered with two runs in the bottom of the 2nd and three more in the 3rd.

Sulphur answered back to make it 5-3 after the Dogs scored two in the top of the 4th, but Ada responded with another run in the bottom half.

ROFF 5, SULPHUR 3

In similar fashion, Sulphur battled back to make things interesting late but came up just short on Saturday in a loss to Roff.

Sulphur trailed 5-1 going into the bottom of the 6th before pushing across two runs.

But that would be all the Dogs could muster, as Sulphur left 10 more on base in the defeat.

Mobly was 3-for-3 with a double from the leadoff spot in the loss, including an RBI.

Drake Wood was 2-for-4 at the plate.

Traber Sartors took the loss for Sulphur but pitched well, going four innings and allowing just two earned on two hits. He struck out an impressive nine for the Dogs.

Roff led 2-1 after an inning and also added a run int he top of the 5th.
