A 60-year-old Dallas man was rescued from a Mill Creek area cave after becoming trapped about 100 feet down, according to a post from the Johnston County Emergency Management.
The rescue took place last Sunday evening, officials said.
According to media reports, crews worked for more than eight hours into the evening hours to free the man.
There were over 40 first responders at the scene, including Johnston County EMS, who used their up-fitted Polaris Ranger for transportation over rugged terrain, according to emergency managers.
Officials said a staging area was set up about five miles from the scene.
Rescue personnel used a rope and pulley system to lift the man out of the cave, reports indicated.
The Johnston County Dive Team also responded for a possible cave dive to gain access from a nearby cave if that became necessary in freeing the man, officials said.
The area of the cave is near the Johnston-Murray County border, southeast of Sulphur.
“Everyone was focused and worked great together,” according to a emergency management official. Johnston Co resources who responded included Mill Creek Fire, Johnston Co EMS, Tishomingo Fire, Reagan Fire and Johnston Co Emergency Management (several of these agencies also make up the Johnston Dive Team). Also responding were the Murray County Sheriff’s Office and the Sulphur Fire Department.
