Lady Dogs Surge On The Diamond

The Sulphur girls had a great week on the diamond, as the Lady Bulldogs won four of five games to move their record to 4-3 on the young season.

After dropping two to open the year last week, Sulphur beat Dickson 20-12 last Tuesday before falling to Lexington 6-4 on Thursday.

However, Sulphur responded with three straight wins, including an 11-3 victory over Madill on Monday.

The Lady Dogs also beat Elmore City 11-1 and Healdton 15-0 last week.

“We came out hot to start the week and scored a bunch of runs against Dickson,” said Sulphur head coach Heath Gilbert. “But we really didn’t show up against Lexington. We have to come ready to play mentally every day.”

Gilbert talked about how different slow pitch is and the need to be ready each day.

“Slow pitch is like that,” he said. “You think its easy but you have to stay focused.”

The head coach was pleased with his efforts in the three wins since, citing some changes and better play all around.

“We played a lot better against Elmore City and we sort of got our mojo back,” he said. “We made some position changes against Healdton and it paid off.”

Gilbert spoke about his defense and pitching as some of the keys to the win streak.

“We got the bats hot, played great defense and got outstanding pitching from Brylie (Sanford) against Healdton,” he said.

In Monday evening’s win over Madill, Gilbert was impressed with the consistent aggressive approach his team displayed.

“We stayed focused and hit the ball hard,” he said. “We made them make some errors and we took advantage of them. It’s al-ways nice to get a run-rule to start the week out on fire.”

In the win over Madill, Sulphur scored six runs in the 2nd inning and four more in the 4th to put the Wildcats away.

Sulphur had 15 hits in the win and was led by Gracie Ratchford, who finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs.

Cheyenne Ruth was also 2-for-3 with an RBI double, while Sanford and Kinzi Adkison were also 2-for-3, each finishing with a triple and two RBIs in the win.

Kinsley Rochelle also had two hits in the win.

Sulphur hosted Marietta on Tuesday and will be at the Lexington tournament this weekend, before an off week over spring break.

The Lady Dogs will return to action on March 25, when they travel to Roff. Sulphur will return home the following day for a 4 p.m. contest against Wilson.
