The Sulphur powerlifters did it again.
Sulphur won its 7th straight state championship last week, as the Bulldogs outscored all other large schools and cruised to the Class 3A state title.
The Dogs had 126 team points, the most in school history.
“This year we were very blessed to have some of the strongest kids to every step foot in the weightroom at Sulphur,” said Sulphur head coach Keith Garrett.
Noah Riley (145),Austin Garrett (181) and Nash Williamson (220) each won a state title for Sulphur, the first time the program has had three individual state champions in one season.
“Having three individual state champions is something that I don’t know if any school has ever had that,” Garrett said.
“Sulphur had two 20 years ago with Brandon Flowers and Dakota Lewis, and I’m sure if you ask Jeff Flowers, who has been working with our powerlifters since the program started, even he would tell you that three state champs in the same year is unheard of.”
Riley totaled 1,185 lbs., while Garrett finished with a 1,405 total and Williamson finished at 1,505.
Caden Cole (275) was runner- up and Conner Sullivan (242) was 3rd individually.
Cole totaled 1,500 lbs. and Sullivan had a 1,490 total Jeremiah Knowles (145) and Cash Matlack (157) were each 6th for Sulphur.
Knowles had a 1,085 total, while Matlack finished at 1,135 lbs.
“Having now won 7 consecutive state championships is a testament to the hard work that our kids and coaches pour into this sport.” “Sulphur is blessed with having Jeff Flowers, Brandon Flowers, Jeremy Hardoin, and Dale Crawford volunteering their time in making sure these kids are successful and continuing a great tradition of powerlifting here at SHS.”
