Sulphur bounced back after a loss last Monday to win two games over spring break in southeast Oklahoma, as the Dogs beat Durant 3-2 and Hugo 14-7 last week.
The Dogs (9-5) fell to Latta on Monday in Sulphur’s first action back this week, Sulphur lost to Fort Gibson last Monday 4-1, as the Dogs spent the week out of school in the Southeast Shootout.
“It was a really good time for our group and they got to bond together as a team,” said Sulphur head coach Mike Matlack. “We played three quality teams and went 2-1. I want to give a big shoutout to our parents, who kept the boys fed really well while we were there.”
Sulphur faced Dickson on Tuesday and will play host to the Sulphur Festival this weekend.
The Dogs will host Whitesboro, TX on Saturday for a noon first pitch.
Sulphur 3, Durant 2
With the game tied at 2-2, Sulphur quickly walked Durant off in the bottom of the 7th last Tuesday.
Kaden Seitz doubled to open the inning, and then advanced to 3rd on a wild pickoff attempt.
This allowed freshman Jax Jackson to come to the play, lay down a bunt, and score Seitz to win the game.
Jackson laid down the bunt towards the first base side, as Seitz raced home to get the Dogs an exciting victory.
Jett Runyan and Briar Davenport pitched really well for Sulphur in the win.
Runyan started and pitched 4.2 innings, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out seven.
Davenport pitched 2.1 shutout innings, allowing just a hit and striking out four hitters.
Cash Matlack and Davenport also doubled at the plate for Sulphur, as Matlack was 2-for-3 in the win.
Maddax Mobly was also 2-for-3.
Durant took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd, before Matlack drove home Davenport on an RBI double to tie the game.
The Lions regained the lead in the top of the 5th before Sulphur answered again.
Mobly singled to left to score Davenport and knot the game at 2-2.
Sulphur 14, Hugo 7
The offense exploded on Wednesday afternoon at Hugo, as Sulphur got out early and used 12 hits in an impressive win. Sulphur led 4-0 after an inning, 6-0 through two frames and 8-0 in the 3rd.
Hugo wouldn’t go quietly, however, as the Buffaloes scored three in each of the next two innings to cut the lead to 10-6.
But Sulphur scored four more in the top of the 6th to put the game back out of reach.
Davenport was 2-for-2 with a double, triple and two RBIs in the win.
Matlack was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Runyan was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Trabor Sartors doubled in the win, while Bridge Barrett, Colten Cole and Eathin Kennedy each drove in a run for Sulphur.
Kennedy picked up the win for Sulphur, pitching two no-hit innings, striking out four and walking just two.
Latta 5, Sulphur 3
Sulphur managed just two hits in a loss to Latta on Monday, as the Dogs struggled at the plate.
After Sulphur tied the game up at 2-2 in the 2nd, Latta scored two runs in the top of the 3rd and another in the top of the 4th, keeping the Dogs from crossing the plate the rest of the way.
Kennedy and Runyan each had RBIs for Sulphur, while Davenport and Matlack each singled.
Mobly walked three times for Sulphur, as the Dogs walked 11 times as a team but could not get timely hits.
“We just could not get any big hits,” said Matlack. “They are a very good team and we had our opportunities, but we didn’t capitalize.”
Drake Wood pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits to take the loss, while Seitz pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in relief.
“Drake and Kaden threw plenty well but our run support was lacking,” Matlack said.
