Alvord’s Session Review

State Senator Jerry Alvord

State Senator Jerry Alvord

Recently, we had another deadline pass here at the Capitol. It was the cutoff for bills to move out of their chamber of origin. This marks a significant milestone in the legislative process, as it signifies the completion of the initial phase of lawmaking for bills introduced in the Senate and House respectively.

Throughout this session, we’ve seen a considerable amount of impactful legislation make its way through the legislative process. Among these bills are SB 1635 and SB 1939, both of which are part of a series of measures aimed at combating illegal marijuana grow operations. These bills are crucial steps in addressing the challenges posed by illicit drug activities and ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities.

Another notable piece of legislation is SB 1705, which helps strengthen current laws that prohibits any foreign government or foreign government enterprise from acquiring title to or owning land in the state. This measure not only reinforces our sovereignty but also contributes to the efforts to combat illegal grow operations, thereby safeguarding our land and resources.

In addition to addressing public safety concerns, we’ve also prioritized supporting our first responders and helping to incentivize recruitment. SB 102 increases the retirement benefits that law enforcement officers receive upon retirement, while SB 631 reinstates the annual retirement payment made to Oklahoma Law Enforcement Retirement System members who died in the performance of their duties. This recognizes the dedication and sacrifice of our officers and ensures they are adequately supported in their retirement years.

Similarly, SB 453 focuses on enhancing pension benefits for rural volunteer firefighters, who play a vital role in protecting our communities. Volunteer firefighters make up the majority of fire personnel in rural Oklahoma, and it’s essential that we provide them with the resources and support they need to continue their invaluable service.

Furthermore, I’m pleased to announce that the Budget resolution for the Senate has passed off the floor. This marks a significant achievement in our efforts to ensure fiscal responsibility and accountability in state spending. This session, we’ve implemented a new process for budgeting that prioritizes transparency and openness, making the budgeting process more accessible to the public.
