The Sulphur boys golf team was busy over the last week, as Sulphur competed at the Seminole tournament before hosting the Sulphur Invitational on Monday.
The Dogs were 3rd as a team at Sulphur, led by Alec Ivy, who shot 80 to place 7th individually.
“Alec played well outside of a few holes,” said Sulphur head coach Grant Bates. “He was able to shoot 80 with a triple bogey and three double bogeys.”
Bates talked about his mental toughness to rebound from tough holes and keep his round together.
“He showed a lot of mental fortitude and bounced back with some really high level shots,” Bates said. “He made some birdies right after some of his tough holes.”
The Dogs had a team score of 349, finishing behind champion Lone Grove (290) and runner-up Durant (346).
“We were able to shoot our low round of the year and have an opportunity to finish as runner-up,” Bates said. “We just had a couple of bad holes and it put us out of 2nd place.”
Jett Terry shot 85 to finish 14th, while Casey Whitaker was 20th with a 95.
“Jett played well in stretches, but just couldn’t get the short game going to score when the opportunities were there,” Bates said. “Casey stepped up and got his first top 20 finish on his last tournament on his home course.”
Trey Anderson and Grayson Beam tied for 27th with a 94.
Landen Woods shot 103, Mason Griffin carded a 122 and Eli Roberts shot 123 to round out the scoring for Sulphur.
Sulphur finished 8th at Seminole earlier last week, as the Dogs had a team score of 366.
Terry shot 83 to place 17th, while Anderson shot 88 to finish 27th.
Ivy shot 92, Whitaker shot 103 and Griffin finished at 119 for Sulphur to round out the scoring.
“I’m pleased with how we are continuing to lower our team total with each tournament since spring break,” Bates said. “It’s just about continuing our progress and trying to play our best golf when playoff time comes.”
Sulphur will be at Lakeview Golf Course in Ardmore for the Lake Country Conference event next Monday.
The Dogs will play again on April 11 at Firelake Golf Course in Shawnee for an event hosted by Tecumseh.
