The Sulphur boys had their best meet of the season last week at the Elgin Owl Classic, as the Bulldogs finished 3rd as a team.
“I thought we had our best meet of the year,” said Sulphur head coach Emile Heitland. “The boys placed 3rd overall in a really tough meet with Moore, a 6A school, Elgin, one of the top teams in 5A and Cache, who many consider the top team in 4A.’” Sulphur had 92.5 team points, finishing behind champion Moore (123.5) and runner-up Elgin (114).
Heitland talked about how his team worked hard over spring break and saw it pay off the week after.
“We had a great turnout for spring break practice and it really showed with the performance by the entire team,” he said. “We had a lot of personal bests.”
The boys 4x200 finished 1st, as Brytan Gaddy, Trace Todd, Austin Garrett and DaMontre Patterson ran their fastest time of the year.
Kaleb Madron won the 800 with a time of 2:06. “Kaleb had his best meet of the year,” Heitland said. “He’s been working extremely hard in practice and is starting to get back into racing shape. He ran a really good time in tough conditions with 2530 mph winds.”
Patterson continued to impress in the 100, finishing 2nd with a time of 10.68.
“DaMontre continued his trend of dropping his 100 time at each meet this year with a blazing fast performance,” Heitland said.
Gaddy had his personal best performance in the long jump to finish 3rd at 21-07.
Grady Hardoin was 3rd in both the 110 and 300 hurdles, while Dax Lowrance was also 3rd in the high jump.
The 1600 meter relay was 3rd, as Gaddy, Todd, Austin Garrett and Halen Panell ran well.
The boys 3200 meter relay (Madron, Huston Holder, Treygon Gehrig and Freehill) was also 3rd.
Zak Kirk was 4th and Pannell was 5th in the 3200, while Todd was 6th in the 200 and Landy DeArman was 6th in the pole vault.
On the girls side, Jadyen Lee was 1st in the 800, as she took advantage of some new training techniques which are working well.
“She ran a great 800,” Heitland said. “We have tweaked her training plan a little to fit her strengths better and it is starting to pay off.”
Kenleigh Johnson continued her strong season, as she placed 1st in the discus for Sulphur.
PHOTO BY DON COFFEY “Kenleigh has really made great strides this year in discus,” Heitland said. “Last year the discus was her weakest of the throwing events but through her great work ethic and determination has turned it into her strength. She has medaled in all three meets this year in that event.”
Amaurie Peters continued to run well for Sulphur, placing 3rd in the 400.
“She continued to shine and ran her best time of the year in the 400,” Heitland said.
Hannah Hall was 3rd in the 1600 for Sulphur.
The 9th grade boys also had a good showing, featuring several medalists.
