Jolly Appointed To Sulphur Board Of Education

Sulphur Board of Education members approved the appointment of Steven Jolly to fill the unexpired term of board member Tammy Scrugham, who resigned the board at last month’s meeting.

Sulphur Board of Education members approved the appointment of Steven Jolly to fill the unexpired term of board member Tammy Scrugham, who resigned the board at last month’s meeting.

Jolly is director of theArbuckle Master Conservancy District.

The board also heard a presentation from Shelly Ellis, the Community manager of the Sulphur AWARE Program. The program is a federally funded five-year grant that Sulphur was awarded approximately three years ago. AWARE, Advancing Wellness and Resiliency on Education, is a program designed to develop a sustainable infrastructure for school-based mental health programs and services.

Ellis updated board members on what the program is actually doing in the local schools. Ellis told members the program allows the school to partner with other agencies outside of the school on mental health issues and that Sulphur schools have made approximately 50 referrals this year to outside agencies for counseling.

Ellis and the building principals told members they think the program is going very well and is very helpful for the school with progress being made.

Superintendent Matt Holder gave the financial report, saying the school is in very good shape financially with approximately $9,721,646.00 total in all combined accounts including the general fund, child nutrition fund, building fund, bond fund, sinking fund and gifts fund, Holder also told members the building project should be seeing concrete coming in the next few weeks.

Reports from the athletic director and principals revealed that spring sports are in full swing with baseball, softball, track, and golf, as well as state testing at some of the sites.

High school Principal Clete Cole invited board members to the annual Junior-Senior Banquet to be held on April 19 followed by the prom.

Cole also told members the high school scholastic team placed 2nd in their division at the meet at Murray State College in Tishomingo.

In other agenda action the board approved the following:

•Services contract with BOK Financial Securities, Inc.;

•Resolution authorizing the sale of the District’s General Obligation Building Bonds, Federally Taxable Series 2024, and fixing the time and places the bonds are to be sold, fixing the amount of bonds to mature each year and authorizing the Clerk to give notice if said sale as required by law;

•approved employment of the Kiser Law Firm as bond counsel in association with the proposed issuance of general obligation bonds;

•adding MaKenzi Darnell to substitute list pending background check;

•allowing the high school Vo-Ag to make a trip to Tyler, Texas in April to pick up plants;

•allowing the Kindergarten classes to go to Frank Buck Zoo in Gainesville, Texas on April 8, 2024;

•allowing senior trip to the Texas Rangers game inArlington, Texas in May;

•approve the sharing sick leave policy; and

•approved allowing the administration of Emergency Opioid Antagonist by trained personnel.

Following a short executive session, the board approved the resignation of Jamie Gutierrez and the employment of Trudy Eldred as the high school secretary.
