Gazing Into History

Solar Eclipse Dazzles Local Residents
Gazing Into History

Sulphur school students, business owners and town-folks gazed into history Monday, watching an event that not come around for another 20 years.

People throughout the community were dazzled as the moon slowly drifted into the sun’s path, creating a solar eclipse with about 95% of totality.

The celestial event was at its maximum about 1:44 p.m. when all but a sliver of the sun was visible in Sulphur. The sky noticeably dimmed for several minutes until the moon drifted off on its northeasterly route across the Unites States through Maine.

For many local school kids, it was a thrill to witness the event, and perhaps their best classroom experience of the day. For others, it was a neat break in their lives to witness such an uncommon occurrence.

Some areas of the state such as Idabel and other towns in southeastern Oklahoma were in the path of totality where skies darkened like night.

The next eclipse will not occur until 2044.
