The Oklahoma Scholastic Shooting Sports Program regional shoots competition, hosted by Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, was held on April 2-3 at Oklahoma Trap and Skeet association field in El Reno with shooters from around the state competing.
Sulphur was represented by three shooters, Warren Coombs, Randon Thomasson and Gunner Guffey, and coached by Josh Wilkins, Sulphur FFA/Vo-Ag leader.
Coombs is a sophomore in his third year as a shooter, and Thomasson and Guffey, both eighth graders, are in their second seasons in the sport.
In the state finals shoot, Guffey won the second highest score from south region with a 22 and Thomasson was a sixth place finisher with a score of 20.
At state, Thomasson finished seventh overall in junior high scores with a 22 and Guffey was ninth with a score of 21.
Thomasson shot his overall best score of 98 out of 100 birds on April 14 in El Reno, receiving his 50 straight patch.
On March 29th, Coombs and Thomasson competed at the AIM at Excellence Farm Credit Shoot in Sayre, at the Red Dirt Shooting Club.
Thomasson won champion 8th grade junior high shooter.
Coombs is the son of Justin and Adria Barton of Sulphur, and Mike Coombs of Valley View, TX; Guffey is son of TJ and Mandie Guffey, Sulphur; and Thomasson is the son of Coll and Jessica Thomasson of Sulphur.
All the boys hope to grow the shooting sports team for years to come for the Sulphur Public Schools. In the last few years, several shooters have gone on to win scholarships to very successful programs in Oklahoma.
