A massive recovery effort is underway in Sulphur since Saturday night’s tornado destroyed much of the historic business district and northeast side homes and businesses. Experts from a wide array of disciplines, equipment and supplies are arriving daily to assist tornado victims complimented by local churches and organizations.
The scope and size of the disaster response is breathtaking.
Thousands of volunteers are working at the Murray County Expo Center where tons of supplies, food and clothing are being stored and food is being prepared daily for workers and volunteers.
Hundreds of workers from this state and neighboring state’s electric utility companies are joining forces to restore power that has been off for much of east Sulphur since late Saturday. Slowly, power is being restored in some areas if the buildings are safe for the power to be turned on.
The City of Sulphur is being augmented in the recovery from neighboring cities and State of Oklahoma providing law enforcement and other needs.
Following is disaster-related information for victims and volunteers:
•Murray County Expo Center, 3400 W. S.H 7: Volunteers report, resources including donations, food, water, toiletries, clothes, etc. are available;
•Red Cross: Point of contact, Sherry (405) 444-4470. Resources available to people affected by the tornado who need help obtaining lost prescription medications, food and water;
•Shelter: Crossway Church, 2018 W. Bdwy., Sulphur. Shelter for individuals and families displaced by the tornado;
•Medical Unit: Artesian parking garage, 1001 W. 1st, Sulphur. Resources available for everyone including medical, food and water;
•T-Mobile: Tractor Supply, 2108 W. Bdwy., Sulphur & Crossway Church. Resources available include charging stations and phones.
•Limb, Debris, Construction Material Disposal Only (no household trash): Sulphur Limb Yard, South U.S. 177;
•Assist Wireless: The U.S. Government Free Phone Program: Big red tent on front of Crossway Baptist Church in Sulphur;
•Mail Retrieval Location: Local mail can be retrieved at the Davis Post Office for those with a PO Box and missing mailboxes; local mail should be delivered as per usual to your livable structure mailbox;
•FEMA Funding: Visit DisasterAssistance.gov for funding resources. This is for individuals and businesses. You can also call 1-800-621-FEMA(3362). There is also a FEMA app for iPhone and Android devices. Incident period is April 25 and continuing.
