Dog Golfers End Season In Eastern Regional Meet

The Sulphur boys golf team wrapped up its season last week at the regional tournament, finishing another solid year.

Sulphur competed in far eastern Oklahoma at Wolf Mountain Golf Club in Wister.

“It was our first year to be 4A in boys golf,” said Sulphur head coach Grant Bates. “It was a tough regional with some good teams.”

Bates talked about how the difficulty of playing an entirely new course played a factor for his team but the head coach was proud of how they adjusted.

“I thought even though we were in an unfamiliar place that our guys kept a good mentality and tried their best,” he said. “It just flat out wasn’t our day.”

The Dogs had their highest team score of the year.

“We shot our worst round of the year as a group and it just happened at the worst time,” Bates said.

Bates was proud of his only senior, Casey Whitaker, who competed well for Sulphur all year long.

“Casey Whitaker was a great lone senior for us,” he said. “He made every tournament this year and had a lot of improvements in his game in his time here as a Sulphur golfer. I’m proud of him and what he gave to the program.”

The Dogs return the rest of the squad that improved throughout the year, as well as welcome some junior high golfers that can provide the program with a bright future.

“We return the remainder of the team next year and have a couple of younger guys coming in that can help us out in the future,” he said.

Bates thinks the experience at the regional tournament, as well as how the Dogs played, will only fuel the fire for the team in 2025.

“I’m looking forward to this past event being a stepping stone to our team’s growth into getting back to the competitive level we strive to be at,” Bates said.
