Outstanding SHS Athletes Honored At Annual Event

Outstanding SHS Athletes Honored At Annual Event

Sulphur High School hosted its annual Athletic Awards Banquet last week, recognizing another great year in sports across the program for the Bulldogs.

Eleven senior girls were honored, while 19 boys were recognized across another great senior class.

Several special, individual awards were handed out, as well.

The Bill Lannon Athlete of the Year awards, handed out to the top girl and boy athletes in the senior class, were awarded to three individuals this year.

Kinzi Adkison won the award on the girls side, while Damontre Patterson and Brytan Gaddy both took home the award for the boys.

In fast pitch last fall, Adkison hit .380 was second on the team with seven steals. She had 21 hits, including four triples and four doubles. She also had 13 RBIs and scored 21 runs.

Adkison averaged 4.6 points, 2.8 rebounds in her final season on the hardwood. She also led the Lady Dogs with 1.8 assists and 1.9 steals per game.

This spring, Adkison hit .550 in slow pitch to go along with a team-leading six triples and 32 runs scored. She also had 12 doubles, two homers and drove in 30 runs.

Patterson helped the Dogs on both sides of the ball this year in football, as he was a threat at receiver and was a key defender at corner in the secondary.

He finished the year with 21 tackles, three interceptions and seven pass breakups on defense and was named to the Class 3A-2 All-District team as a defensive back.

Offensively, Patterson had 26 catches for 505 yards and five touchdowns.

Patterson won his second straight state championship in the 100 meter in track this spring, as well as was a member of the state runner-up in the 4x100 - a team that set the school record.

He owns the school record in the 100, 200 and 4x100 and will play football at the University of New Hampshire this fall.

Gaddy was a weapon in the passing game for Sulphur during his entire career on the gridiron, hauling in 51 receptions for 1,187 yards and 14 touchdowns.

In his senior season, Gaddy had 24 catches for 447 yards and five touchdowns. He will play at Drake next season.

Gaddy was also a part of the school record setting 4x100 team, and brought home a handful of medals from the state track meet over the years during his track career.

The Jeff Nye Fighting Heart award hands out two, as well, to one girl and boy.

Jadelyn Scheer and Eathin Kennedy were honored as the 2023-2024 Fighting Heart winners.

Scheer averaged 3.2 points and 5.3 rebounds for the Sulphur Lady Dogs in basketball in her senior season.

She was also a part of the 4x400 relay team that qualified for state this spring in track on the girls side.

Kennedy played running back and linebacker for the Dogs in football, helping Sulphur to a state quarterfinal appearance.

He also had a solid senior season on the mat in wrestling before being one of the leaders in baseball.

Kennedy was a 2-time all-district selection for the Dogs, as he was 6-4 on the mound for Sulphur in 12 starts. He had a 2.74 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP, striking out 47 hitters across 51 innings.

He also hit .309 at the plate with 28 RBIs as a senior.

The Jim Dixon Bulldog award is a new award, holding a high honor, handed out to one girl and one boy.

Codi Reid and Trace Todd each won that award, recognizing their great careers.

During fast pitch in the fall, Reid led the team with a 1.088 OPS and had a .347 average.

She had two homers, 30 RBIs and scored 24 runs - all a team high.

She finished 3rd at the state powerlifting meet, setting a new state record in the deadlift at 345 lbs.

She hit .581 this spring in slow pitch, leading Sulphur with a .968 slugging percentage and a 1.580 OPS. She had three homers, three doubles, three triples, 19 RBIs and scored 31 runs.

Reid was recently named to the all-district 2nd team in slow pitch. Todd started in the secondary for the Dogs in football before excelling in basketball.

He averaged 6.1 points and 2.9 rebounds per game, leading the Dogs from beyond the arc by shooting a team-high 34% from three.

Todd was also a member of the school-record holding 4x100 relay team in track that finished as runner-up.

Todd also took home the Jim Dixon Scholarship award.

Huston Holder and Danielle Allgood won the Academic Athlete of the Year awards.

The seniors were honored in several groups, sorted by sports played.

The one-sport senior girls recognized were Rasey Runyan (basketball), Reagan Runyan (basketball), Peyton Callen (basketball), Mabry Jones (basketball) and Courtney Keith (basketball). The two-sport girls were Brylie Sanford (fast pitch, slow pitch) and Hailee Jenkins (slow pitch, powerlifting).

The three-sport girls were as follows: Reid (fast pitch, slow pitch, powerlifting),Adkison (fast pitch, slow pitch, basketball), Mykell Woods (fast pitch, slow pitch, powerlifting) and Scheer (fast pitch, basketball, track).

The boys one-sport athletes were Coy Myers (football), Tristen Grantham (track), Trenton Combes (track), Garrett Sisneros (basketball), Marcus Smith (basketball), Braxton Wilkerson (cross country) and Casey Whitaker (golf).

The two-sport participants were Patterson (football, track), Gaddy (football, track), Noah Riley (football, powerlifting), Jeremiah Knowles (football, powerlifting), Billy Anderson (football, powerlifting), Treygon Gehring (cross country, track), Halen Pannell (cross country, track) and Mason Slater (cross country, track).

The three-sport boys were Todd (football, basketball, track), Holder (football, basketball, track) and Davi Le (cross country, track, powerlifting).

Kennedy was the only foursport athlete in the senior class, as he participated in football, wrestling, baseball and cheer.
