Three Sulphur Baseball Players Named To All-District Team

Three Sulphur baseball players were recognized recently by the coaches of district 4A-2, as the Bulldogs had another solid season and finished with a 21-16 record.

Senior Eathin Kennedy, as well as juniors Maddax Mobly and Cash Matlack were all three named to the all-district team for their outstanding seasons.

Kennedy was the top pitcher for Sulphur in 2024, going 6-4 on the mound in 12 starts. He had a 2.74 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP, striking out 47 hitters across 51 innings.

“Eathin had a great career,” said Sulphur head coach Mike Matlack. “He has progressed every year and grew into a great leader this past season.”

He also hit .309 at the plate with 28 RBIs as a senior.

“He will be dearly missed,” Matlack said. “He was our No. 1 on the mound this year and always matched up against our opponent’s best arm.”

Mobly was the top hitter for Sulphur in 2024, leading the Dogs with a .402 average, .567 on-base and .999 OPS.

“He led us offensively, even though injury limited his defensive opportunities,” Matlack said.

Mobly had three doubles, 20 RBIs and led the team with 30 walks and 26 steals. He had 41 hits, scored 37 runs and struck out just 11 times in 142 plate appearances.

“He showed a lot of leadership from the leadoff spot and we will learn on that tremendously next spring,” said Matlack.

Cash Matlack led the team with 42 hits, 10 doubles, two homers and 33 RBIs. He also stole 25 bases.

He was just behind Mobly in all three categories, hitting .368 with a .457 on-base and .965 slugging percentage.

“Cash stepped up offensively for us this year, hitting in the three hole.” Matlack said.

He also had just two errors in the outfield, finishing with a .970 fielding percentage in 67 total chances.

“His defense was stellar all year in the outfield,” Matlack said. “Many balls he tracked down this spring even surprised me.”
