Debris Cleanup Continues In Downtown, Residential Areas

Debris cleanup from the April 27 tornado that devastated much of the eastern Sulphur downtown business district and residential areas is continuing this week with all roads being opened in the affected locations.

Some buildings destroyed in the tornado are being demolished by wrecking companies and others that can be repaired are in the loop, including the Times-Democrat building at 115 West Muskogee Ave. Workers last week removed the damaged awning, the first step in getting the 1920’s-era building back and ready for occupancy. The installation of a new roof and inside repairs will complete the process, according to Times-Democrat publisher, James John.

Other building repairs are ongoing at BancFirst, one block to the north, and at the Chickasaw Telephone Co., both of which sustained extensive damage, to mention just a few.

All total, there were about 68 businesses and 148 homes either destroyed or damaged in the tornado. In above photo, work continues in the removal of a building at West 2nd and Muskogee Avenue that was destroyed in the twister.
