Doyle was born October 8, 1952, in Hobbs, New Mexico, to Doyle Jack and Christine Nahoma (Brooks) Phelps. He died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2024, in Oklahoma City, at the age of 72. He and the former Ms. Billie Jean Seabourn were married on August 31, 1972, in Denison, TX.
Doyle grew up in the Mill Creek/Sulphur area. After graduating from the Oklahoma School for the Deaf in Sulphur, where he played football as a walk-on, he attended East Central University, graduating as the first deaf male in school history. After college, Doyle worked in graphic designs in Oklahoma City. He later worked as a welder for Delta Mining in Troy until an injury forced him into early retirement.
Doyle was a very loving and kind man. His love for his family was unwavering, especially when it came to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching classic western movies, drawing, fishing, and caring for his beloved dogs.
Survivors include his loving wife, Billie; two daughters, Stacy Cross and husband G.W. of Tulsa, and Johnnie Dodson and husband Terry of Sulphur; one son, Kendrick Phelps of Sulphur; mother, Christine Phelps of Sulphur; eight grandchildren, BethAnn Horton, Dylan Cross, Chris Dodson, J.W. Dodson, Terra Dodson, Jada Phelps, Wyatt Phelps and Jackson Ty Phelps; as well as 11 great-grandchildren.
Doyle was preceded in death by his father, Doyle Jack, and an infant brother, Jacky Ray Phelps.
